The Aberdeen Insider is a local news outlet covering Aberdeen, South Dakota, publishing online and in print. It is a DBA of McQuillen Creative Group, Inc.
The Aberdeen Insider launched in January 2023, founded by local entrepreneur Troy McQuillen, whose company also publishes Aberdeen Magazine and The Watertown Current, in response to staff reductions at the Gannett-owned Aberdeen American News, which had been reduced to a single reporter. McQuillen recruited Elisa Sand, the American News' last remaining staff reporter, as associate editor, and Scott Waltman, a nearly 30-year Aberdeen journalism veteran who had taken a Gannett severance package, as managing editor. The outlet's website went live January 25, 2023, and its first print edition followed in April 2023. On July 15, 2024, the City of Aberdeen designated the Insider as its official newspaper of record, replacing the American News.
