Academe is "the quarterly magazine of the American Association of University Professors," which "explores critical issues facing higher education,". The winter, spring and fall issues carry feature articles, book reviews, opinion columns and news.
The summer issue is the annual Bulletin of the American Association of University Professors, which "collects AAUP reports and policy documents from the previous academic year." A companion site, the Academe Blog (academeblog.org), publishes commentary on higher education news through the year.
Its submission guidelines state that "Academe is not a peer-reviewed publication." Articles run 1,000 to 4,000 words, Faculty Forum columns about 700 words, and accepted pieces are edited by AAUP editorial staff.
The AAUP was founded at a meeting in New York City on January 1–2, 1915, according to the AAUP's history page. In a 2014 Academe Blog post, editor Michael Ferguson wrote that the first Bulletin of the American Association of University Professors appeared in December 1915, and that "Academe came into existence in 1967" as a newsletter with short updates on chapter activity and national office news. The two publications ran side by side until 1979, when they "merged as Academe: Bulletin of the AAUP."
According to Ferguson, in 2010 the AAUP separated editorial content from association reports, retitling the magazine Academe: Magazine of the AAUP and reviving a separate annual Bulletin, and "beginning in 2012, the Bulletin took the place of the September–October issue." AAUP's 2012 announcement of a new faculty editor said that under outgoing faculty editor Cat Warren the magazine began publishing original journalism and received a complete redesign. The online issue archive lists six issues a year (January–February through November–December) through 2018 and four seasonal issues (Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall) from 2019 on.
2010 – present. Annual Bulletin issue — collects AAUP reports and policy documents from the previous academic year; listed in the online archive as the July–August issue (2012–2018) and the Summer issue (2019 on).

Annual Report on the Economic Status of the Profession — the AAUP's faculty compensation survey report ran as the March–April issue in each of these years in the online archive (for example, "On the Brink," 2008–09; "No Refuge," 2009–10; "Losing Focus," 2013–14; "Busting the Myths," 2014–15).
