American Journal is a weekly newspaper covering the Maine towns of Westbrook, Gorham, and Buxton, published by the Maine Trust for Local News alongside the Portland Press Herald and Sun Journal.
The paper's roots trace to the Westbrook American, published from 1951 to 1968, which merged with the South Portland-Cape Elizabeth Journal to form American Journal. Longtime Portland Press Herald reporter and editor Harry Foote later owned Westbrook's local paper, which came to be known under the American Journal name. The title became part of Sun Media Group and, following the 2023 sale of Sun Media Group and MaineToday Media assets, is now part of the nonprofit Maine Trust for Local News.
The paper covers town government, schools, and community life in Westbrook, Gorham, and Buxton, with an archive of more than 7,700 digitized pages from 2016 onward.
Content is published weekly online through pressherald.com/american-journal and sunjournal.com/american-journal, with print and digital access tied to Maine Trust for Local News subscriptions.
