Japan’s Asahi Shimbun, an international institution

Paper has survived war and economic revolution

The Asahi Shimbun publishes a print and online daily newspaper, including a full English-language edition, throughout Japan. It was founded in 1879 by Kimura Noboru and Murayama Ryōhei in Osaka, Japan, and remains headquartered there. Over the years circulation and influence grew, and today it is one of Japan's leading newspapers.

After World War II, Asahi underwent significant changes. It shifted its editorial stance and began to play a prominent role in shaping post-war Japan's political landscape.

The Asahi Shimbun is owned by The Asahi Shimbun Company, a publicly traded corporation. It is one of the four major national newspapers in Japan.
