Sulaymaniyah, Kurdistan Region, Iraq
The AUIS Voice is described by its own masthead as Iraq's first independent English-language student newspaper, published at the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS) in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, covering news, opinion, culture and campus life.
AUIS itself was founded in 2006 by a board of trustees, with support from figures including Kanan Makiya, Fouad Ajami and John Agresto, intended to help stimulate reform in Iraqi higher education. The AUIS Voice operates out of offices on the AUIS campus and is recognized by the university as Iraq's only independent student newspaper. AUIS also hosts student chapters of the U.S.-based Society of Professional Journalists and the Association for Computing Machinery.
