The Austin American-Statesman is a major daily newspaper serving metropolitan Austin, Texas. Founded in 1871 as the triweekly Democratic Statesman, the Statesman provides local, national, and international news coverage. It frequently redistributes stories from the New York Times, the Washington Post, Associated Press, USA Today, and other sources. In addition to news coverage, the newspaper actively co-sponsors local events.
Gannett owns the Austin American-Statesman. Cox Enterprises acquired the Statesman in 1976 when it purchased Waco-based media company Newspapers, Inc. On March 6th, 2018, Cox sold the newspaper to GateHouse Media. In August 2019, News Media Investment Group, the parent company of GateHouse Media, acquired Gannett. The combined enterprise took the name Gannett as its operating and brand name. This acquisition was finalized on November 19th, 2019.
Subscribers gain access to the eNewspaper, available in both digital and print formats. Subscription prices include two options: the print edition at $5 per print, and a digital subscription is also available. Per the site’s Terms of Services, private information is collected through 3rd party services.
In 2023, the Austin American-Statesman received the Pulitzer Prize for a piece in collaboration with the USA Today Network for their coverage of the Uvalde, Texas mass school shooting.
