Founded in 2011, its mission is to train high school youth to become community journalists, elevating the voices of the community by producing stories "por y para la comunidad" or "for and by the community." The project aims to empower young reporters to become community leaders and conveners. Boyle Heights Beat operates as a quarterly publication and is a non-profit organization. It serves as a platform for local news and aims to engage and inform the residents of Boyle Heights.
