New Cairo, Egypt
The Caravan is the student-run weekly newspaper of The American University in Cairo (AUC), housed within the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication and covering campus and regional news in English and Arabic.
According to the AUC journalism department and the newspaper's own historical materials, The Caravan was founded in 1921, two years after AUC's establishment, initially serving a student body composed solely of men. Separately, AUC's official news office, marking the university's centennial, has dated the paper's founding to 1925 under the earlier name The AUC Review. The Caravan played a significant reporting role during Egypt's 2011 revolution, with student journalists covering demonstrations in and around Tahrir Square adjacent to the university's downtown campus. Firas Al-Atraqchi has served as the paper's faculty advisor since 2010. Notable alumni include broadcaster Lamis El Hadidi, TV presenter Mona El Shazly, and writer Louis Greiss.
