Degrees offered

The school offers undergraduate degrees including a BA in Media, Journalism and Culture, alongside postgraduate taught programs in journalism, media, and communications, and MPhil and PhD research degrees.

Programs and emphasis

JOMEC combines industry-oriented, practice-based journalism training with more theoretical postgraduate degrees in media and cultural studies. The School is home to the Centre for Community Journalism (C4CJ), which developed one of the first Massive Open Online Courses on community journalism and oversees the Independent Community News Network (ICNN), the UK's representative body for community and hyperlocal news publishers.

History

The school was founded in 1970 as the Centre for Journalism Studies at University College Cardiff by Sir Tom Hopkinson, former editor of Picture Post, who served as its founding director until 1975. It is described as the longest-established postgraduate centre of journalism education in Europe. The school was based in the Bute Building on Cardiff University's Cathays Park campus until September 2018, when it moved to a purpose-built facility at 2 Central Square, adjacent to BBC Cymru Wales's headquarters.

Key faculty and leadership

Matt Walsh: Head of School, appointed after more than 20 years in broadcast and digital journalism at ITN, the BBC, and The Times, where he launched the paper's multimedia journalism department.
Paul Bowman: Deputy Head of School and Professor of Cultural Studies.
