Biography

Catherine Salmond earned an MA (Hons) in English Literature and History from the University of Glasgow, studying there from 2000 to 2004. She began her journalism career as a reporter at the Fife Free Press before moving to the Edinburgh-based Scotsman Publications titles, where she held senior news and digital roles including live news editor at The Scotsman and Edinburgh Evening News.

Salmond became editor of Scotland on Sunday, then part of National World, in August 2021. In September 2022, Newsquest announced she would join The Herald as editor, succeeding Donald Martin, who had edited the paper and its sister title The Herald on Sunday since 2017 and stood down on August 31, 2022, after more than 30 years editing various UK titles. Salmond became the first female editor in The Herald's 239-year history. She reports to Callum Baird, editor-in-chief of Newsquest Scotland, who was promoted to that role from editor of The National around the same time. In an editorial introducing herself to readers, Salmond wrote that she was determined to “maintain the trust you expect from The Herald, while bringing an energy and enthusiasm which will be mirrored in our content.”
