Centralmaine.com is the shared digital platform for the Kennebec Journal, based in Augusta, Maine, and the Morning Sentinel, based in Waterville, Maine, covering the state's capital region and central Maine.
The Kennebec Journal began publishing as a weekly in 1825; the Morning Sentinel traces its roots to 1904. Both papers became part of Guy Gannett Communications for much of the 20th century before being sold to Blethen Maine Newspapers in 1998, MaineToday Media in 2009, and Masthead Maine, controlled by Reade Brower, in 2015. In August 2023, the papers were acquired by the Maine Trust for Local News, a subsidiary of the National Trust for Local News, transitioning most of Maine's daily newspapers to nonprofit ownership. Starting in April 2025, the papers reduced print publication to five days a week with mail delivery replacing newspaper carriers.
The Kennebec Journal is the oldest continuously published newspaper in Maine, marking its 190th anniversary in 2015, and both papers have long served as accountability outlets for Augusta and Waterville-area government.
