Climate.us

Overview

Climate.us is an independent nonprofit climate-information platform launched in 2026 as a successor to NOAA's Climate.gov after the federal site was effectively shut down in 2025. Built by former Climate.gov staff, it provides plain-language climate news, explainers, data dashboards, maps and educational resources intended to preserve public access to climate science outside the federal government.

Key functions and role

The site republishes and updates roughly fifteen years of Climate.gov's news archive, expert blogs and visual status reports on indicators such as Arctic sea ice, carbon dioxide levels, ocean heat and sea level rise. It maintains a Maps & Data section describing more than 280 NOAA-linked datasets, a Teaching Climate section built around the Climate Literacy and Energy Awareness Network (CLEAN) collection, and it restored public access to the U.S. Global Change Research Program's Fifth National Climate Assessment after that report was removed from federal websites. All content passes through a scientific review process involving volunteer subject-matter experts.

History

NOAA's Climate.gov operated for nearly fifteen years as one of the federal government's most visited climate-information resources before its full-time staff were terminated in workforce reductions in the first half of 2025 and the site went dark. Former Climate.gov staff, led by the site's former program manager, organized a nonprofit successor that launched a preliminary version in September 2025 and went fully live as Climate.us on June 23, 2026. The project restored the Fifth National Climate Assessment online in September 2025 and received a one-time grant from an anonymous donor in March 2026 intended to fund its core team for twelve months.

Political positions

Climate.us describes itself as nonpartisan and says its goal is to keep climate data accessible independent of changes in political administration. Its founding followed workforce and budget cuts to federal climate and science agencies under the second Trump administration, and several of its supporters and press write-ups have framed the project as a response to reduced federal investment in public climate communication.

Leadership

Rebecca Lindsey, a science writer and former NOAA contractor who managed Climate.gov before being let go in a 2025 reduction in force, directs Climate.us and serves as its managing editor. The project operates under the fiscal sponsorship of Multiplier, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit umbrella organization.
