The Courier-Mail, owned by News Corp Australia, is said to be Australia’s fourth-highest circulating daily newspaper. It started as a weekly paper known as The Moureton Courier Bay, Founded by Arthur Sidney Lyon in 1846. A majority of their 3-million-monthly readership lives in the Brisbane metropolitan area. The newspaper leans towards right-wing editorial endorsements.
In 1859, James Swan acquired the paper and led its transition into The Courier. In 1933, Keith Murdoch's Herald and Weekly Times merged The Brisbane Courier and The Daily Mail, giving rise to The Courier Mail’s first publication on August 28, 1933. In 1964, it became The Brisbane Courier. In 1987, Rupert Murdoch’s News Limited took over.
Until 2006, The Courier-Mail issued a broadsheet newspaper. It later transitioned to a tabloid format, aligning with other Australian metropolitan dailies.
In 2014, The Courier-Mail faced criticism from SBS News for a transphobic depiction of an Indonesian transwoman.
As of 2021, The Courier-Mail recorded a readership of 375,000 copies for the Saturday edition and 273,000 copies for Monday to Friday editions across Australia.
