Dallas website reports on issues involving underserved communities
The Dallas Free Press launched in 2020 is a nonprofit digital news website based in Dallas, Texas. They report on stories favoring underserved communities and to hold leaders accountable. They mostly focus on South and West Dallas (historically redlined neighborhoods) to inform on complex civic issues and offer possible solutions. They see that traditional news models do not speak to these issues because they are limited to communities where advertisers spend money to reach wealthiest city residents. Subscription models face the same dilemma: Content tailored to people willing to pay a subscription price. The nonprofit model altogether avoids this problem.
