DBNL Digitale Bibliotheek voor de Nederlandse Letteren (Digital Library for Dutch Literature)

History and Founding

The DBNL (Digitale Bibliotheek voor de Nederlandse Letteren) was founded in 1999 by the Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde (Society of Dutch Literature) as a pioneering effort to create a digital library for Dutch and Flemish language and literature. Initial development was supported by donations from NWO (Dutch Organisation for Scientific Research) and the Nederlandse Taalunie (Dutch Language Union). From 2015, following Dutch legislation, DBNL was formally integrated into the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (KB), the National Library of the Netherlands, which now hosts and manages the portal alongside the Dutch Language Union and the Flemish Heritage Library.

Collections and Holdings

DBNL contains more than 15,000 titles of literary texts, secondary literature, and supporting materials including biographies, portraits, and hyperlinks. The collections span Dutch literature from the Middle Ages to the present day and represent the full Dutch-language area, including works from Flanders, Suriname, Frisian-speaking regions, and South Africa. DBNL maintains the Dutch Basic Library (Basisbibliotheek), a curated selection of 1,000 key texts from Dutch and Flemish cultural history. It also contains linguistics journals such as De Gids and De Revisor. Works whose copyright has expired are available as downloadable XML and plain text files.

DBNL holds significant runs of Dutch literary and cultural journals that served as forums for literary criticism and cultural debate. Its holdings include periodicals central to the development of Dutch print culture, offering valuable primary source material for research into Dutch media and literary history.

Access and Usage

DBNL is freely accessible online at dbnl.org. Texts in the public domain are available for full-text reading, download, and computational analysis. More recent materials protected by copyright may be available for reading online but not for download. The KB provides the DBNL dataset to researchers and institutions for computational text analysis.
