Dover, Delaware, USA
Delaware Public Media is the first and only noncommercial public media news service established and headquartered in Delaware, and the state's only NPR member station, broadcasting on WDDE-FM 91.1 from Dover with a simulcast on WMPH 91.7 in Wilmington.
Delaware Public Media was founded in 2009 as Delaware First Media by a group of longtime Delaware journalists, many of whom had previously worked at WHYY-FM-TV in Philadelphia and had been laid off when that station scaled back Delaware coverage. The organization launched an online news service, DFM News, in 2010, then secured a construction permit for a noncommercial station in Dover that Maryland's Salisbury University had allowed to lapse. With support from former NPR Weekend Edition Sunday host Liane Hansen, a Delaware resident, Delaware First Media obtained the backing needed for a full NPR member station, and WDDE-FM began broadcasting August 17, 2012, from studios on the Delaware State University campus.
