Fred Vallance-Jones is an associate professor at the University of King's College in Halifax, where he teaches investigative and data journalism and leads the King's investigative workshop, a program in which journalism students pursue major investigative stories as a team. Before joining King's in 2007, he had a 23-year career as a journalist with the CBC and the Hamilton Spectator, winning a National Newspaper Award and an Investigative Reporters and Editors award, and was a finalist for the Michener Award for Meritorious Public Service in Journalism. He is a co-author, with David McKie, of The Data Journalist: Getting the Story and Computer-Assisted Reporting: A Comprehensive Primer, and of Digging Deeper: A Canadian Reporter's Research Guide. He leads the annual Newspapers Canada Freedom of Information Audit and King's Summer School in Data Journalism, and in 2021 he and McKie received the Canadian Association of Journalists' Charles Bury Award for their contributions to data and investigative journalism in Canada.
