Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
The Georgia Straight is a free weekly news, arts and entertainment newspaper published in Vancouver, British Columbia, and is Canada's largest urban weekly publication. It is delivered to newsboxes, post-secondary schools, public libraries and other locations across the city.
The Straight was founded May 5, 1967, by Dan McLeod alongside Pierre Coupey, Milton Acorn, Stan Persky and others, operating originally as a collective. Vancouver Mayor Tom Campbell attempted to suspend the paper's business license over its content, and founder McLeod was jailed for three hours on May 12, 1967, on vagrancy charges. McLeod edited and published the paper until 2020, when the McLeod family sold it to Toronto-based Media Central Corporation. Media Central merged the Straight's editorial department with its marketing and sales operations and filed for bankruptcy in March 2022. On September 27, 2022, Overstory Media Group, a Canadian media company based in Victoria, British Columbia, acquired the Straight's assets, returning it to West Coast ownership and restoring its focus on local arts and culture coverage. In March 2024, former British Columbia Premier Glen Clark was named Overstory's interim CEO.
