Hampton University is a private, historically Black university in Hampton, Virginia.
Journalism at Hampton is housed in the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications (SHSJC), established in 2002 through a $10 million commitment from the Scripps Howard Foundation. The school is accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC).
Hampton was founded in 1868 as the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute by the American Missionary Association, under the leadership of former Union General Samuel Chapman Armstrong, to educate freedmen after the Civil War. The school became Hampton Institute in 1930 and was renamed Hampton University in 1984.
