The Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA, 香港電影資料館) is the principal repository for the preservation and study of Hong Kong cinema. Operated by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, the Archive is located in Sai Wan Ho on Hong Kong Island and serves as both a film preservation institution and a public cultural resource for cinephiles, researchers, and filmmakers.
The HKFA was established in 1993 and opened its purpose-built facility in Sai Wan Ho in 2001. Its founding responded to growing recognition of the international cultural significance of Hong Kong cinema—one of the world's most distinctive and prolific film industries—and the urgent need to preserve films and related materials that were deteriorating or at risk of loss. The Archive has since become a leading institution for Asian cinema preservation.
The Archive holds over 60,000 reels of films, including feature films, short films, newsreels, and documentaries, representing the breadth of Hong Kong cinema from the silent era through the present. In addition to film elements, the Archive holds extensive non-film materials including film stills, posters, lobby cards, production documents, screenplays, clippings, costumes, props, and personal papers of filmmakers and actors. The collections cover Cantonese, Mandarin, and other-language productions made in Hong Kong.
The Archive holds extensive newsreel and documentary film collections documenting Hong Kong's history and social development across the twentieth century. These materials are of significant value to researchers studying the history of visual journalism and documentary filmmaking in Hong Kong. The Archive's holdings of press materials, film publicity, and entertainment journalism records provide insight into the relationship between Hong Kong cinema and the local and regional press industry.
The HKFA is open to the public and provides reading room access to its non-film collections. Film screenings are regularly held in the Archive's on-site cinema. Researchers can access archival materials by appointment. The Archive's online catalog enables searching of film titles and related materials. The Archive also publishes research materials and hosts educational programs on film history.
