The Jail Data Initiative (JDI) is a project from New York University’s Public Safety Lab that scrapes daily county jail rosters. Its public dashboard allows users to view trends in jail populations, and to filter those trends by state, county, date range, and limited demographic categories. JDI’s profiles on individual facilties, which includes information on detainees’ length of stay and their charge type (when available), are also public. Users can request access to detailed booking records, “including the identities of arresting officers, court documents, information on people experiencing homelessness, and details on immigration detention,” through JDI’s Data Use Agreement.
JDI’s data is used to support research into topics such as the composition of jail populations and the impact of pre-trial detention and bail practices on re-incarceration rates.
