Biography

James P. Gorman is chairman of The Walt Disney Company, a position he has held since January 2025, and chairman emeritus of Morgan Stanley. Born in Melbourne, Australia, he earned a bachelor's degree and law degree from the University of Melbourne and practiced law before earning an MBA from Columbia Business School. He worked as a senior partner at McKinsey & Company and held executive positions at Merrill Lynch before joining Morgan Stanley in February 2006. He was named co-president in December 2007, became CEO in January 2010, and chairman in January 2012, serving as CEO until December 2023 and as executive chairman through 2024. He serves as a director of the Council on Foreign Relations, co-chair of the Board of Overseers of Columbia Business School, and a trustee of Columbia University, and previously served as a director of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and chairman of the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA). He received the Museum of American Finance's 2020 Whitehead Award for Distinguished Public Service and Financial Leadership.
