West Coast Environmental Law — former Communications and Development Manager
Before joining The Tyee, Jeanette Ageson worked as communications and development manager at West Coast Environmental Law, a non-profit environmental law organization based in British Columbia. She joined The Tyee, the independent Vancouver news site, in 2014 as director of community development, a role in which she organized public events and managed the outlet's reader-membership program, Tyee Builders.
Ageson became The Tyee's chief revenue officer in 2016, when co-founder Michelle Hoar, the outlet's first full-time publisher, departed the organization; Ageson took over its revenue-generation and operations activities, including growing the Tyee Builders program. She became publisher of The Tyee in 2018 and has since worked alongside editor-in-chief David Beers to expand the organization's staff, publishing output and revenue streams. On February 28, 2022, Ageson and Beers announced that The Tyee had officially become a non-profit organization as of the start of that year — a transition, structured as the new Tyee Independent Media Society, that had been in the works since 2018 — and that the outlet had added Peter Klein, Michelle Hoar, Melody Ma and Deblekha Guin to a new volunteer board of directors. In their joint announcement, Ageson and Beers wrote that the non-profit structure meant "we do not exist to enrich any owner. We won't be bought or sold or merged."
As publisher, Ageson has described her role as providing the organization with the resources it needs so its journalists can do their work. She serves as chair of Press Forward Canada, an association of independent Canadian journalism organizations that advocates on public policy affecting the news industry.
