Joseph M. Valenzano III is dean of Butler University's College of Communication, a role he assumed in 2022 after serving as professor and chair of the Department of Communication at the University of Dayton. Earlier in his career he was Basic Course Director at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where his introductory communication program won a Basic Course Program of Excellence award from the National Communication Association; he later won the award a second time at Dayton, making him the only person to receive it at two different institutions. Valenzano holds a bachelor's degree in psychology and political science from Providence College, a master's in communication from the University of Maine, and a Ph.D. in public communication from Georgia State University. His research on rhetoric, religious discourse and instructional communication has appeared in the Southern Communication Journal, Communication Monographs and Communication Education, and he has authored or co-authored three textbooks and two monographs.
