Overview

The Los Angeles Review of Books (LARB) is a nonprofit literary magazine publishing long-form reviews, essays and interviews on contemporary and classic literature, culture and the arts.

History

LARB was founded by Tom Lutz, then chair of the Creative Writing Department at the University of California, Riverside, launching as a preview on Tumblr in April 2011 and as a standalone website in April 2012, with a print edition following in May 2013. Lutz served as editor-in-chief and executive director for its first decade; he stepped down as editor-in-chief in 2021, succeeded by Boris Dralyuk and later Michelle Chihara, while Irene Yoon became executive director.

Notable works

Lutz also founded The LARB Radio Hour, the LARB Quarterly Journal, LARB Books and the LARB Publishing Workshop, a training program launched in 2016 that has enrolled more than 500 early-career publishing professionals.
