Overview

Mainely Media, LLC is a publisher of southern Maine community weeklies, including the Biddeford-Saco-OOB Courier, Scarborough Leader, South Portland-Cape Elizabeth Sentry and Kennebunk Post. It operates as part of the Maine Trust for Local News.

History

Operated for about 20 years under George Sample's Sample News Group before Reade Brower's RFB Enterprises acquired Mainely Media's weeklies as part of a deal for the Biddeford Journal Tribune and Brunswick's Times Record, closing April 1, 2018. In 2023, Brower sold the group, along with MaineToday Media and Alliance Media, to the nonprofit National Trust for Local News, which operates the titles as the Maine Trust for Local News. In July 2025, the Maine Trust discontinued print publication of Mainely Media's four titles as part of broader cost-cutting that eliminated 49 positions; all four remain available digitally.

Notable works

Maine's Supreme Court affirmed a 2022 jury verdict in favor of Mainely Media, LLC and two of its reporters in a defamation suit brought by a former Biddeford police officer over the Biddeford-Saco-Old Orchard Beach Courier's 2015 reporting on decades-old sexual abuse allegations.
