History

Founded in 1868 by William and Mary Ann Grieve. It became the founding paper of Better Newspapers, Inc. when Greg Hoskins and Cleon Birkemeyer formed the company on May 1, 1991, initially also encompassing the Clinton County News, Fairview Heights Tribune and Scott Flier. Better Newspapers, Inc. has since grown to more than 25 papers across Illinois and Missouri. Greg Hoskins died in 2024; his son Scott Hoskins has since become president of the company.
