The Messenger is the official Catholic newspaper of the Diocese of Belleville, Illinois, covering church-related news for 127 parishes across 28 southern Illinois counties. It is delivered biweekly by mail to roughly 10,000 paid subscribers.
The Messenger traces to the early 1910s, originally published in Belleville and East St. Louis, Illinois, by Joseph N. Buechler, with a supplement titled the Belleville Diocesan Review published from 1925 to 1936. The paper marked its 100th anniversary in the mid-2020s. Michael McGovern served as Bishop of Belleville before being installed as Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Omaha, Nebraska, on May 7, 2025; the Very Rev. Godfrey Mullen, OSB, was subsequently elected Diocesan Administrator.
