Middle Tennessee State University is a public research university in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
Journalism at MTSU is housed in the School of Journalism and Strategic Media (SoJSM), part of the Scott Borchetta College of Media and Entertainment. The school traces its academic roots to the Department of Mass Communications, approved in 1972, and was known as the School of Journalism before adopting its current name on July 1, 2018. It offers a B.S. with majors in Journalism and Advertising and Public Relations, spanning concentrations including entertainment journalism, environmental journalism, sports media, and media studies.
MTSU was founded on September 11, 1911, as the Middle Tennessee State Normal School, a two-year teacher-training institution created under Tennessee's General Education Bill of 1909. It became a four-year Middle Tennessee State Teachers College in 1925, Middle Tennessee State College in 1943, and achieved university status as Middle Tennessee State University in 1965.
