The University of Minnesota Twin Cities is a public land-grant research university in Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota.
Journalism at the University of Minnesota is housed in the Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication, part of the College of Liberal Arts. Established as a department in 1922 and elevated to a school in 1941, it was renamed the Hubbard School in 2017 in recognition of the Hubbard family of Hubbard Broadcasting. It was among the first 35 programs accredited by the national journalism accrediting council in 1948 and is based in Murphy Hall, offering undergraduate majors in journalism, strategic communication, and mass communication.
The University of Minnesota was chartered by the Minnesota Territorial Legislature in 1851, seven years before Minnesota achieved statehood. The school closed during the Civil War and reopened in 1867 after receiving land-grant status under the Morrill Act, reorganizing as a university in 1869.
