The Montclair Times is a weekly newspaper covering Montclair, New Jersey, owned by USA Today Co. (formerly Gannett) as part of the USA Today Network's North Jersey Media Group titles.
Founded in 1877. Gannett acquired the Times in 2016 as part of its purchase of North Jersey Media Group, laying off roughly 250 NJMG employees. Dissatisfaction with the resulting cutbacks led former Times arts editor Gwen Orel and local tech executive Heeten Choxi, along with other laid-off staffers, to launch a competing independent weekly, Montclair Local, in 2017. The Times relocated its offices from Montclair to Cedar Grove in 2014, sharing space with sibling North Jersey Media Group titles including the Verona-Cedar Grove Times, Bloomfield Life, Glen Ridge Voice, Nutley Sun and Belleville Times.
A Montclair State University Center for Cooperative Media content analysis found the paper ran fewer and less substantive local stories, with more content shared across Gannett's other New Jersey weeklies, following the 2016 acquisition.
