Overview

Morning Sentinel is a daily newspaper published in Waterville, Maine, covering parts of Franklin, Kennebec, Penobscot and Somerset counties. It is part of the Maine Trust for Local News.

History

Founded March 3, 1904, as the Waterville Morning Sentinel by a group including Waterville Mayor Cyrus Davis, future U.S. Senator Charles Fletcher Johnson, future mayor L. Eugene Thayer and newspaperman Thomas F. Murphy. Guy Gannett purchased the paper in 1921. Sold to Blethen Maine Newspapers (The Seattle Times Company) in 1998, MaineToday Media in 2009, Masthead Maine in 2015, and the nonprofit National Trust for Local News in 2023, which operates it as the Maine Trust for Local News. Starting in April 2025, the paper reduced print publication from six days to five and shifted to mail delivery via USPS.

Won 15 Maine Press Association awards in both 2024 and 2025, including three first-place honors in 2025.
