The Nevada Independent is a nonpartisan, nonprofit, digital-only newsroom covering Nevada state and local government, campaigns and elections, the economy, and policy areas including education, health care and the environment. Content is published in both English and Spanish, and the site is free of a paywall.
The Nevada Independent operates as a dba of Nevada News Bureau, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit originally founded in 2010 by Elizabeth Thompson. The organization was revived in 2016 by Thompson alongside veteran political journalist Jon Ralston, and the news site launched in January 2017 with an initial staff of seven. Ralston, who had covered Nevada politics for the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Las Vegas Sun and Reno Gazette-Journal over more than three decades, serves as founder and CEO. The outlet has grown to a staff of 31, according to its 2023 tax filings, and formed content-sharing agreements with the Associated Press and public broadcaster KUNR in 2024.
