The New York Times Company is a publicly traded media company headquartered in New York City, publisher of The New York Times.
The Times trades publicly on the NYSE under the ticker NYT, but voting control rests with the Ochs-Sulzberger family through the 1997 Trust, which holds nearly all of the company's Class B common stock and elects nine of thirteen board directors. A.G. Sulzberger, the sixth member of the Ochs-Sulzberger family to hold the role, serves as both chairman of the company and publisher of the newspaper; Meredith Kopit Levien is CEO. Major institutional Class A shareholders include Vanguard and BlackRock.
Founded in 1851 by Henry Jarvis Raymond and George Jones. Adolph Ochs purchased the financially struggling paper in 1896 for roughly $75,000; upon his death in 1935, control passed to a family trust to prevent fragmentation of ownership.
