Biography

Nicholas Hune-Brown is a Toronto-based magazine journalist and Executive Editor of The Local, an independent nonprofit online magazine covering urban health and social issues in Toronto. As a freelance writer, he has published long-form narrative journalism, personal essays and cultural criticism in The Walrus, Toronto Life, The Guardian, Hazlitt, Slate, The Believer, The Globe and Mail and the Toronto Star, on subjects including homelessness, end-of-life decision-making, autism education, transit and a Chinese dissident dance troupe. He has also written a books column for Canadian Business, a sports column for Sharp Magazine and a social-studies column for Hazlitt, and his work has twice appeared in the anthology Best Canadian Essays.

Hune-Brown joined The Local as an early editorial team member after it spun off in 2019 from a hyper-local storytelling project incubated at UHN OpenLab, a design and innovation studio at Toronto's University Health Network; he has served as the magazine's features editor, senior editor and, currently, executive editor. He has won multiple National Magazine Awards, including the 2022 Editor Grand Prix, awarded for his editing work at The Local, and the National Magazine Award for Investigative Journalism for his Walrus cover story on the business of international education in Canada. That same Walrus investigation also won the 2022 Canadian Hillman Prize for Journalism and the Canadian Association of Journalists' award for Written Feature. His 2019 Toronto Life feature on homelessness, “No Fixed Address,” won the Dave Greber Freelance Writers Award.
