The NRK Archive is the historical audiovisual archive of NRK (Norsk rikskringkasting), the Norwegian public broadcasting corporation. It holds one of Norway's largest collections of radio and television broadcast materials spanning over ninety years of Norwegian broadcasting history. Information about accessing NRK archive materials for research, educational, and licensing purposes is provided through the info.nrk.no portal.
NRK was established on 1 July 1933, replacing earlier private radio broadcasters, and has grown into Norway's largest media organization with approximately 3,500 employees at 56 locations nationwide. It began television broadcasting on a trial basis in 1954 and regular television broadcasts in 1960. NRK is wholly state-owned, guided by independent editorial bylaws, and is a founding member (1950) of the European Broadcasting Union. NRK's archive holds approximately 60,000 hours of historical radio recordings that have been digitized in a major collaborative project with the National Library of Norway.
The NRK Archive encompasses historical radio programs, television broadcasts, news footage, documentaries, and entertainment programming accumulated since the corporation's founding. A major digitization project conducted in partnership with the National Library of Norway has transferred more than 50,000 hours (170,000 programs) of historical radio content to the National Library's facilities in Mo i Rana, where they are stored and made accessible for research. NRK and the National Library jointly maintain a searchable database of this material, accessible internally and to researchers through federated authentication. Large portions of NRK's broadcast archive are also available to the public through tv.nrk.no and radio.nrk.no.
NRK archive content for research purposes can be ordered through the National Library of Norway or local libraries at no charge. Norwegian schools may use NRK material for educational purposes without licensing. Copies of specific programs for personal use can be purchased directly from NRK (television programs at NOK 400; radio programs at NOK 300). Commercial use or public platform publication requires a separate licensing agreement through NRK's rights department.
