Gaylord College offers undergraduate and graduate programs in journalism, mass communication, and public relations, plus a highly selective, fully funded Ph.D. program admitting up to five students per year.
The college is a founding member of ACEJMC and home to the Native American Journalists Association. It houses Lindsey+Asp, the only student-run advertising and public relations agency with a dedicated wing of the journalism facility, and Oklahoma Scholastic Media/OIPA, the oldest continuing secondary school press organization in the world. In 2023, Gaylord College ranked second nationally by the Broadcast Education Association for student achievements.
A School of Journalism was first established at the University of Oklahoma in 1913, three years after student newspaper The Umpire debuted in 1897 (renamed The Oklahoma Daily by 1916). The school was renamed the H.H. Herbert School of Journalism and Mass Communication in 1961, honoring its second director (1917-1945). In May 2000, following a $22 million gift from the Gaylord family, former longtime publishers of The Oklahoman, the school was elevated to college status as the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication.
Andrea Miller: Dean since 2024, previously dean of the University of North Texas's Mayborn School of Journalism.
David Craig: Interim dean prior to Miller's arrival.
Charles C. Self: Founding dean of the college.
The Oklahoma Daily is the university's independently run student newspaper.
