Traces to the Leadwood Press, founded Jan. 10, 1930, by Rev. S.M. Brumfield; moved to Flat River in 1935 and renamed the St. Francois County Journal in 1940. Became a daily as the St. Francois County Daily Journal on Sept. 3, 1946. Lee Enterprises sold the Daily Journal and three sister titles to Better Newspapers Inc. in June 2023. In September 2025, the Hoskins family sold the Daily Journal, along with 14 other Illinois and Missouri titles, to Kentucky-based Paxton Media Group; Better Newspapers Inc. retained its remaining publications and radio stations. Better Newspapers Inc. founder Greg Hoskins died in 2024, after which his son Scott Hoskins became president of the company.
