Pasadena Star-News is a paid daily newspaper for the greater Pasadena, California area, with free online content. It is a member of the Southern California News Group and the San Gabriel Valley Newspaper Group, alongside the San Gabriel Valley Tribune and Whittier Daily News.
The paper traces to April 1886, when H.J. Vail published the first issue of the Pasadena Star. The Star merged with the Pasadena Daily News on March 1, 1916, to form the Pasadena Star-News. Ridder Publications bought the Star-News in 1956; Ridder merged with Knight Newspapers in 1974 to form Knight Ridder. In 1989, the paper was sold to MediaNews Group, owned by William Dean Singleton. Thomson Corporation, then owner of the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, bought a majority stake in 1990, and in 1996 Thomson sold the Star-News, Tribune and Whittier Daily News together to MediaNews Group, forming what became the Los Angeles Newspaper Group, later renamed Southern California News Group. The group is now published by Digital First Media, owned by the hedge fund Alden Global Capital.
