PEN America

PEN America is the U.S. branch of PEN International and advocates for freedom of expression, freedom of speech and the safety of writers. PEN America is known for their work in combating censorship. In 2024, PEN played a major part in helping defeat several bills in the Florida legislature that would have restricted protected speech and limited the freedom of expression. Their victories halted Florida’s years-long streak of passing similar bills and was followed by similar successes in the courts. PEN America also provides free speech guides and gives updates on book banning efforts.

PEN America combats literary censorship by fighting to keep diverse stories in libraries and schools. PEN supports writers through financial sponsorship, workshops, and public programming to defend freedom of expression. PEN also hosts a Literary Gala to celebrate dedicated and courageous writers. PEN America is one of the centers internationally that share the mission of uniting writers to celebrate creative expression.
