Athens, Georgia, USA
The Red & Black is an independent, student-led nonprofit newspaper serving the University of Georgia (UGA) and the city of Athens, Georgia, the largest college newspaper in Georgia. It publishes daily online and a weekly print edition, and in 2021 became the first student organization to join the Institute for Nonprofit News.
The paper published its first tabloid-format issue on November 24, 1893, from offices in the Academic Building on UGA's North Campus, for a student body of roughly 212. Publication briefly halted in 1895 after a conflict with university faculty, resumed as a private venture, and was reclaimed by faculty in 1896 as the official organ of the Athletic Council through 1928. It later served as a laboratory paper for UGA's School of Journalism. In 1980, following repeated conflicts with university administrators over its coverage, the UGA Board of Regents approved The Red & Black's independence; it relocated off campus and became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit funded by advertising and donations, receiving no student fees or university funding. In August 2012, two student editors briefly resigned amid a dispute with the paper's board over editorial control before being reinstated after the board agreed to their demands. The paper shifted to an online-first model in August 2011 and won the Associated Collegiate Press Pacemaker Award in 2010, 2019 and 2020.
