Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada
The School of Journalism offers an undergraduate Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, News Media, and Communication (a redesigned four-year integrated degree launched in 2024), a two-year post-degree Bachelor of Journalism, a professional, project-based Master of Journalism (MJ), and, on a special-case basis, a thesis-based Master of Arts in Journalism.
The undergraduate program integrates traditional print and broadcast training with digital media, podcasting, and strategic communications, and builds in Indigenous Communication Arts and Public Relations coursework. All undergraduates complete a mandatory paid 13-week internship, which the school describes as Canada's only mandatory paid journalism internship program; internship partners have included CBC, CTV, Global, and Postmedia newsrooms across the Prairies. The Master of Journalism is not thesis-based; students instead produce a major professional project such as a documentary, feature series, or multimedia project.
The University of Regina has offered journalism instruction since 1980, supported since June 1980 by the James M. Minifie Fund, which also endows an annual public lecture featuring prominent Canadian journalists. In 2023 the university paused its undergraduate journalism program for one year to redesign it, relaunching in 2024 as the Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, News Media, and Communication.
Journalism students have written for The Carillon, the University of Regina's student-run newspaper, and for Crow and Ink, a School of Journalism student publication.
