The Reporters Committee for the Freedom of the Press (RCFP) offers pro bono legal services to journalists and newsrooms across the United States. The RCFP is known for its dedication to First Amendment freedoms and protecting the rights of journalists to gather and report the news. In 2017, the RCFP successfully won a case in the U.S. District Court that unsealed records showing that President Donald Trump had paid over $1 million to illegal immigrants in the construction of Trump Tower. This case was the first of many legal victories against the executive branch in the late 2010s in federal courts, and led to more freedom of information cases against the federal government. The RCFP also provides a free 24/7 legal hotline for journalists, plus free reporting resources and legal guides.
