Oxford, England
The Reuters Institute Journalist Fellowship Programme is a University of Oxford programme for practising, mid-career journalists and editors. Fellows spend three or six months at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, taking part in seminars, professional exchange, independent study, and a project relevant to their career, newsroom, or the wider news industry. Most fellows receive full funding and a stipend for living and travel costs.
The fellowship programme was established at the University of Oxford in 1983. It became part of the Reuters Institute when the Institute was founded in 2006. The Thomson Reuters Foundation remains a core funder, alongside other news organizations, corporations, and individual supporters.
The programme combines a global cohort of working journalists with access to the University of Oxford and the Reuters Institute's research on journalism and news media. Fellows attend seminars, exchange experience with journalists from other countries, use Oxford's academic resources, and complete a practical project rather than an academic degree.
Applicants generally need more than five years of journalism experience and must plan to return to journalism after the fellowship. Required materials include a project statement, project summary, motivation statement, curriculum vitae, and two references. Applications for the 2026–27 academic year are closed and the Institute states that applications will reopen in January 2027.
Anne Godlasky has served as Director of Journalist Programmes since March 2026 and oversees the Journalist Fellowship Programme. She reports to Mitali Mukherjee, Director of the Reuters Institute.
