Rolling Stone is an American magazine and media brand covering music, politics and popular culture, publishing in print and online through Rollingstone.com and international editions in 15 countries.
Rolling Stone was founded in San Francisco in 1967 by Jann Wenner and jazz critic Ralph J. Gleason, with Wenner borrowing $7,500 from family to launch the biweekly magazine; its first issue featured John Lennon on the cover. The magazine relocated to New York City in 1977. In September 2016, Wenner sold a 49% stake to Singapore's BandLab Technologies, and in December 2017 sold the remaining 51% stake to Penske Media Corporation (PMC); PMC acquired BandLab's stake in January 2019 to become sole owner. Jann Wenner remained editorial director until 2019 and was removed from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation board in September 2023 following controversial remarks about Black and female musicians.
Rolling Stone received its first Emmy nomination in 2023 for its online investigation "The DJ and the War Crimes." The magazine also launched a UK edition in partnership with Attitude magazine in 2021 and a Chinese edition, and acquired the Life Is Beautiful music and arts festival in 2022.
