Journalism at Rutgers is taught through the Department of Journalism and Media Studies (JMS), one of the departments of the School of Communication and Information (SC&I) at Rutgers-New Brunswick. JMS offers an undergraduate major and contributes to the Digital Media specialization within SC&I's Master of Communication and Media program and to the Media Studies area of SC&I's Ph.D. program.
The undergraduate curriculum combines skills courses in reporting and media production with conceptual courses analyzing media and media institutions. Faculty research spans cultural studies, political economy, media history, journalism studies, media and politics, and science communication. In 2025, the department announced a new Media Production specialization launching in summer 2026, adding hands-on training in video, audio, sports media, and documentary production. JMS is a founding member of the Alliance of Schools and Colleges of Communication and Journalism.
Jerry Aumente, who returned to Rutgers in 1969, founded and directed the Department of Journalism and Urban Communications at Livingston College as well as the Urban Communications Teaching and Research Center; he later founded and chaired the Department of Journalism and Media Studies and founded the Journalism Resources Institute.
Lauren Feldman: Chair and Professor of Journalism and Media Studies.
David Greenberg: Distinguished Professor of Journalism and Media Studies and of History.
