Founded by the Courington family, owners of local radio station WAVU; the first edition published Friday, Aug. 5, 1955 (Wikipedia gives 1954 for the paper's start as a five-day-a-week publication), initially edited by Jesse Culp. In 1999, Southern Newspapers, Inc. of Houston bought the Reporter from the Courington family; Cliff Clements served as publisher until 2006, when Ben Shurett became publisher. By 2019, ownership had passed to Southern Torch Inc., led by Patrick Graham, alongside sister Alabama papers the Jackson County Sentinel and The Times-Journal.
