Sierra Leone Library Board

Overview

The Sierra Leone Library Board is the national public library authority of Sierra Leone, performing certain national library functions in the absence of a dedicated national library. Established in 1959, the Board operates the Central Library in Freetown and a network of regional and branch libraries across the country. Under the Publications Ordinance of 1962, the library operated by the Board is designated one of two copyright libraries in Sierra Leone (the other being the Fourah Bay College Library).

History and Founding

Public library services were introduced in Sierra Leone in 1959, with the establishment of the Sierra Leone Library Board. The Board was created to develop and maintain public library services throughout the country, providing access to books and information for the general population. The Board publishes an annual list of publications, functioning as a de facto national bibliography, and has developed local history collections alongside its general holdings.

Collections and Holdings

The Library Board's collections include general reference and lending materials, local Sierra Leonean history collections, government publications, periodicals, and materials supporting literacy and education. As a copyright depository, the Board receives copies of publications produced in Sierra Leone. The Board maintains branch and regional libraries in locations including Bo, Kenema, Makeni, Bonthe, and other towns.

Access and Usage

The Central Library in Freetown is accessible to the public. Regional and branch libraries serve provincial communities. The Board supports librarians through training and capacity-building initiatives and works toward expanding access to information across Sierra Leone.
