The Stanford Daily is an independent student-run newspaper that serves the communities of Stanford and neighboring Palo Alto/Menlo Park. Founded as the Palo Alto Daily, the name was changed in 1926 to differentiate itself from the Daily Palo Alto Times, solidifying a direct affiliation with the university. The paper did not become independent until 1973. After a multi-year dispute with the university over the paper’s coverage of the Vietnam War, spurred by a 1970 op-ed piece titled “Snitches and Oppression,” the students formed the Stanford Daily Publishing Corporation to operate the paper, which continues to this day.
