The Star began as a regional paper in 1971 in Penang; it became a national newspaper in 1976 when it moved its office to Kuala Lumpur. In 1976 it relocated to Penang because of its growing staff and access to new technologies becoming the first newspaper in Malaysia to offer an online edition.
The Star daily and Sunday Star publish five editions: two editions cover the northern peninsular states, and two other editions cover the rest of the country. There is also a Sarawak edition.
