The Star is an English-language newspaper founded in 1971, based in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. Established as a regional newspaper to cover news in Penang, it now boasts the largest circulation of any newspaper in Malaysia. Its daily circulation in 2017 hovered around 250,000. The Star is part of the Asia News Network and is owned by Star Media Group, a public company. Its largest shareholder is the Malaysian Chinese Association, a political party.
The Star began as a regional paper in 1971 in Penang; it became a national newspaper in 1976 when it moved its office to Kuala Lumpur. In 1976 it relocated to Penang because of its growing staff and access to new technologies becoming the first newspaper in Malaysia to offer an online edition.
The Star daily and Sunday Star publish five editions: two editions cover the northern peninsular states, and two other editions cover the rest of the country. There is also a Sarawak edition.
The main paper covers local and international news, and StarBiz covers business developments, market trends, and financial reports. Star 2 covers entertainment, lifestyles, science, health, and other matters not reported in the main paper. There are 11 weekly sections of the Star.
A 2020 Reuters poll found that 56 percent of Malaysians trusted the Star’s reporting.
